Am I a New Jersey resident?

To be a New Jersey resident, there’s a couple of standards you’ll have to meet.

Your residency depends on where you were domiciled and where you maintain a permanent home during the tax year. Read on to find out how you may qualify as a New Jersey resident!

For income tax purposes, New Jersey defines a resident taxpayer as an individual:

  1. who is domiciled in this State, unless he maintains no permanent abode in New Jersey, maintains a permanent place of abode elsewhere, and spends no more than 30 days of the taxable year in the state; or
  2. who is not domiciled in New Jersey but maintains a permanent place of abode in the state and spends more than 183 days of the taxable year in New Jersey, unless in the Armed Forces of the United States.
